Northeastern US Zone 6 - Planting Schedule

Updated: 3 days ago

My northeastern friends, are you in Plant Hardiness Zone 6? You are in luck! I just made a planting schedule that will cover both zone 6a and 6b (Downloadable planning chart below).

What part of NE U.S. Is zone 6? Odds are part of your state is in zone 6!

  • Michigan

  • Ohio

  • Indiana

  • New York

  • Pennsylvania

  • Maryland

  • West Virginia

  • Maryland

  • Kentucky

When is my last frost date for zone 6a? April 15th

When is my last frost date for zone 6b? Mid April- Mid May

What are the impacts of planting too early?

  • Seedlings can have poor health or freeze and die (if they are NOT a cold crop) Kale can withstand Michigan winters untouched.

  • Less light in early months of the year.

  • Nutrient usage in the soil for plants that might not make it.

What are the impacts of planting too late?

  • Cold crops require spring and early summer temperatures, planting too late could cause cool crops to become woody and bitter.

  • Some crops require you to start inside if you are in zone 6 - such as tomato and peppers, they take longer to grow. You might find yourself having to buy them from someone else if you didn't start indoors back in March!

We can be more specific, if you are unfamiliar with the planting zones. See 2023 maps with information on what zone you are in. Your zone will tell you when last frost dates are so you can start seeds indoors and outdoors at the right time!

So how do you plan for your zone? Easy! Here is a preview to get you started:

Everything takes time, I hope this chart gives you a jumpstart to your garden planning! As always, feel free to reach out for a consultation if you ever need help!
