Updated: Jun 4

Here is a fun one for my plant lovers.

Note: There is an option #2 at the bottom (this is the image picture for blog)

I'd say about $5 in material to get yourself a beautiful single propagation jar.

Here is what I used!

Jars: Find a dealer, I have one in my hometown who I get bulk Oui jars from. Maybe you already eat Oui yogurt? Savings, cha-ching! Etsy also sells them.

(1) Stick or Wooden Dowel

Glue Gun: I would not recommend using any slow-drying glue (you need this to start wrapping twine around the Oui jar)

Scissors

Drill Press: See Notes.

Steps:

Watch me make it on youtube!

Step 1:

Make sure your jar is clean of labels and debris.

  • You can do this by using goo off / soaking - removing with razor blade

Step 2:

Warm up glue gun. Use clearest glue you can find.

Step 3:

While the glue gun is warming; Cut yourself two 24 inch twine pieces (these will be for hanging) and cut enough twine to wrap around your jar approximately 4 times, leaving enough twine to tie a bow in front. This will be something you have to measure by wrapping around your jar.

Step 4: Use glue gun to glue your 24" pieces at the middle point to the jar - this will be glued before you permanently wrap your oui jar and tie a bow.

Step 5: Repeat gluing the other side then tie around your 4x string and make a bow. Use your glue gun to glue the bow in place. These two steps will make sure your Oui jar is stable for hanging. Do NOT SKIP.

Step 6: Drill your lid holes. You could potentially use a table vise and a drill bit to drill your holes through the lid, otherwise you could do without the lids and just leave the jars open.

Step 7: Hanging - Find a stick or dowel that you want to hang your propagation stations on. You want to make sure you orient them so that they face forward with the bow facing you. Get this down, and then we will move onto how to affix to your wall.

So, you have some options:

Single-Hanging

  • Find a hook for your pegboard and pop it in there

  • Find a removeable hook that can handle about 1 lb and stick to your kitchen wall

  • Find a clear window hook that can handle approx a lb

  • Have clothes or hat rack? Looks like your propagation station has a new home

  • Extra towel hook in the bathroom?

Dual-Hanging

Affix another strand of twine to a stick and hang with picture hanging hardware: find these here: https://amzn.to/4dFclUN

Use a old picture frame that will fit your jars in them. Remove all the guts of the frame and add 2-3 hooks inside the frame and use the already installed picture frame hardware to hang on your wall for a more homey feel

DIY Hanging Station Option #2:

ree

Materials:

You need leather making tools and snaps: Try this kit!: https://amzn.to/3Tc959O

Sticks thick enough to cut in half (approx 9 inches - depends on what glass jar you choose to use)

Pliers

Scissors

Twine

Chicken wire or some sort of thin wire to attach together

Glue gun

Notes:

Drill Press is to be operated by those with experience, you need a fixture or a vise to hold down the lids, and have to drill a little on both sides of the bamboo lids in order to create a perfect hole. You can make 3 holes if you feel comfortable, use a ruler to measure and make sure you do not run into the plastic seal below the lid.
